PHOTO LIFE
Richard is excited about being part of Photo Life's anniversary celebration in the current November issue. A photo essay about children in the classroom reveals another side of his creative direction. This project ‘At School: The Classroom Experience’ took place in Miss Jung’s grade 4-5 classroom at J. E. Horton Public School in Barriefield, where Richard's daughter Erin Martin was in grade 4 at the time. "For me it was a privilege as a parent to have the opportunity to be a ‘fly on the wall’ in my daughter’s classroom—to experience her world at school. With my camera I tried to cover the range of the childhood experience as it unfolded for me so that, together, the photos made a statement about being a child in the classroom. During the time I was making pictures for this photo essay I recall my mind drifted back to myself at their age. Somehow, it all came rushing back to me: that sense of mystery and awe, undamaged by conventionality—status quo." ART FOR EMPOWERMENT Art for Empowerment is a not for profit programme which provides the experience of art to empower marginalized children by building confidence, optimism and self-esteem and the life long skill of self expression. Through open concept programming, Art for Empowerment will provide the opportunity for volunteer artists to share their own unique art programme with a group of marginalized children in Mysore, India. Our mission is to provide the structure and space for the workshop leader to experience travel with purpose, to develop their own creative Art for Empowerment programme, to nurture personal growth for all those involved and to enrich the lives of the children who otherwise would not have access to such an art programme In 2007 Elisa Paloschi will return to India with Art for Empowerment’s pilot project, Looking Through the Lens – a 3 month photography workshop, which will use creativity as a means of storytelling, self-expression and empowerment. Art for Empowerment relies entirely on volunteers and donations. We are currently seeking 35mm and digital point and shoot cameras, digital video cameras and laptops.
