Review - Faces and Places
The passionate eye of Elisa Paloschi is the focus of a significant exposition of her photographic works currently on display at Path Yoga Studio in Kingston. This inspiring display of her visual achievements is a rare privilege for Kingston. The show runs until November 13. After it’s showing in Kingston, Faces and Places will travel to Gallery at 129 Ossington in Toronto.
The collection consists of more than fifty images from Elisa’s travels to both India and Italy, where she has uncovered images of everyday life as well as the unusual. The show begins with a series of light infused Tuscan landscapes enveloped in morning mist. A hallmark image from this series titled Mist with Cypress is both sublime and eternal. Bathed in subaqeous light the Tuscan hillside evokes dream like qualities.
There is something deeply personal in this body of work and it is evident that the camera points both ways. Paloschi’s choice of subject matter and the way she presents it on paper is a reflection of her compassion and caring for the world around her.
Shadows are a predominant theme throughout the work. In one image an oblique shadow cast from an architectural detail streams across a wall suggesting an angel’s wing. In many others, shadows serve to envelop and unveil the subject matter, emphasizing form and colour.
Paloschi’s exploration of reality and illusion through various camera techniques such as motion and double exposure further add to her evocative images. The luminous beauty of these photos transport the viewer beyond the literal. Some images evoke the primal, while others suggest solitude. Such images are Mango Alter, Chocolate Door and Yellow Ribbon of Wheat which illustrate her ability to use the camera to express thoughts and ideas to others
The pricing is reasonable for this caliber of work and is structured so that it is both affordable and collectable. 50 % of all Kingston sales will be donated to Art for Empowerment www.artforempowerment.org .
