Join Richard Martin and Italy resource guide Elisa Paloschi for
an 8 day Tuscany workshop experience.
Imagine yourself immersed in Tuscany, a place where you can live
photography for an entire week, virtually free from the distractions
of the outside world. Imagine indulging yourself in an environment
where the focus is on you and your photography, with all the freedom
to play, experiment, and be adventuresome. The workshop experience
will provide that opportunity through a variety of lectures and
field trips designed to advance skills, provide inspiration, explore
new ideas, and deal with the creative process of photography.
Richard Martin has been leading
tours and teaching workshops for 15 years. He is a deeply committed
instructor who guides participants on a voyage of personal rediscovery.
His passion and insight help the student in opening up the creative
doors and to reflect on the special qualities that dwell within
them. Richard has the ability to move people, to connect them with
their emotions and to encourage seeing and expressing.
"Richard Martin's intelligent and caring workshop philosophy
is based on a great deal of experience both as participant and instructor.
The creativity of his vision, images and teaching is inspiring."
- Freeman Patterson
WORKSHOP FOCUS The purpose of this 8 day workshop is to offer
an intensive learning experience for a small group of passionate
photographers who want to live, study and photograph with Richard
Martin in Tuscany. The overall format includes a balance between
classroom instruction, morning critique sessions and field trips
to a variety of scenic locations, with the primary focus on visual
design and the philosophy of vision. Film will be processed daily
to facilitate immediate feedback. Digital or alternative processes
are also welcome.
The workshop will concentrate on
the theme of creating more dynamic photographs using the visual
building blocks of two-dimensional design—line, shape, texture
and perspective, and the possibilities for arranging these building
blocks according to principles such as balance, rhythm, proportion,
and dominance. This is a workshop in vision and is for anyone interested
in photography, from novice to experienced amateur or professionals,
who want to expand their vision, improve technical skills, and change
the way they see. As instructor, my greatest challenge is to help
participants see the world in new, active and deeply meaningful
ways.
This workshop will provide an opportunity
to meet with people who are totally immersed in photography, exchange
ideas and share enthusiasm with others involved in the medium. Time
spent as a group can be a journey both visually and emotionally
- a time for the soul to get away from the daily routines and refresh
the creative energies.
You are invited to join us in making
new friends, exploring a new environment, sharing wine, ideas and
creativity.
To ensure a quality experience, enrollment is limited to 7 participants.
A TYPICAL DAY
Fog shrouded early morning vistas will be photographed as well as
intimate still life’s in the late-afternoon sun. Daily field
trips will be scheduled, exploring the valleys, countryside and
medieval villages, through winding country roads set amidst gentle
landscapes of vineyards, olive groves and cypress trees.
To experience the quality of light
at dawn we start early in the morning exploring the rolling Tuscan
hills before returning to our base for breakfast and a discussion
of the days work and field trips. A review and critique of the previous
day’s images follows. There are presentations and discussions
dealing with visual expression
Richard will accompany students every day to help solve technical
problems and give suggestions and advice. There will be critiques
throughout the week of the work in progress from a technical, compositional
and aesthetic point of view. There will also be free time to allow
for personal exploration of this special region of Italy. Students
may work in slide films or digital, with film being processed regularly
for shared critiques.
Naturally, all parts of the workshop
are optional. If there is a need to recharge, participants may feel
free to sleep in one morning.
SETTING
The intensely beautiful region of Tuscany with its medieval and
renaissance heritage is the very essence of Italy. This is a rich
area to photograph, with superb light. Medieval hill towns with
their narrow streets, shops, and architecture offer many memorable
images. The landscape is the best rural Italy has to offer; the
tranquil, fertile landscapes of the Tuscany countryside; rolling
hillsides capped with medieval villages, shaded avenues lined with
dark cypress, and ancient farms with olive trees and acres of the
famed Brielle grape.
During this workshop we will plan
to visit several medieval hill towns, Etruscan sites, vineyards,
and many other scenic opportunities as time and weather permits.
MEALS
The workshop price includes breakfast each morning and either dinner
or lunch (7 meals)at the farm house in Tuscany each day. Our local
chef will prepare delicious meals using fresh Tuscan ingredients.
(Please inform us of any dietary requirements as all needs may not
be able to be met).
