By popular request Richard will return to Venice in November 2007 to lead a photographic tour – but this time with a twist! Impressed with the prints made by Venetian photographers at this time of year, Richard has chosen to explore the city of canals in November in order to take advantage of the atmospheric mood and quality of light, which comes with the mist and colder weather of late fall.
Venice is surprisingly compact and most of the sights can be comfortably visited on foot; in fact you can cross the entire city in about an hour. One of the great pleasures of exploring Venice is walking in the absence of traffic, and in November, the absence of the usual crowds of tourists.
We will explore the labyrinth of alleys, side canals, courtyards, cloisters and secluded gardens for the many photographic opportunities, which exist behind the scenes. Photographing reflections in the canals and abstract patterns from the countless bridges. Making time exposures at sunset recording the activity of gondolas moving along the Grand Canal from atop one of its three main bridges. Taking 2 day trips to Burano, the most colourful of the lagoon islands, with its waterways lined by brightly painted houses and a trip to the timeless garden like cemetery on the island of San Michele to photograph angels and other splendid Italian sculpture. Or simply getting lost, deep into the residential and working areas of this maze like city to photograph the people at work and play.
The purpose of this 7 day workshop is to offer an intensive learning experience for a small group of passionate photographers who want to live, learn and photograph with Richard Martin in Venice. The overall format includes a balance of early morning, day and evening field trips to a variety of scenic locations around Venice and the lagoon. Richard will accompany participants every day to give suggestions and advice on working with natural light, composition, color and shadow. There will be critiques throughout the week of the work in progress from a technical, compositional and aesthetic point of view. There will also be free time to allow for personal exploration.
Elisa Paloschi has been organizing tours and workshops for Richard for the past 2 years and although she won't be joining the group in Venice, she is all the same co-ordinating this tour. Richard Martin has been leading tours and teaching workshops for 16 years. He is a deeply committed instructor who guides participants on a voyage of personal rediscovery. His passion and insight help the student in opening up the creative doors and to reflect on the special qualities that dwell within them. Richard has the ability to move people, to connect them with their emotions and to encourage seeing and expressing.
This tour is for anyone interested in photography, from novice to experienced amateur or professionals, who want to expand their vision, improve technical skills, and change the way they see. As instructor, Richard’s greatest challenge is to help participants see the world in new, active and deeply meaningful ways.
This tour will provide an opportunity to meet with people who are totally immersed in photography, exchange ideas and share enthusiasm with others involved in the medium. Time spent as a group can be a journey both visually and emotionally - a time for the soul to get away from the daily routines and refresh the creative energies.
